Preparing Physics for IIT JEE

To have mastery over physics - one of the most fundamental branches of science, at any level, one requires good understanding of concepts, logical and conceptual reasoning and applications of various concepts in different situations. This can be achieved by - firstly going through the concepts thoroughly (concepts include derivations, laws, limitations of laws, theory and other important related facts), and then practicing the application part to have clear and sound understanding of the concepts. I will strongly recommend that while practicing the questions dont refer the solution until and unless you have tried it enough (when you feel honestly that you can't solve it now only then you refer to the solution).

While attempting question it is advisable to folio w these steps:

  Read the question carefully.

Make a rough sketch of the situation given in the question.

Identify the data/information provided in the question and also mark them out in the sketch.

Identify the things which have been asked.

Give a thought process and using relevant concepts start solving the questions.

Then check the answer, here I will recommend that after getting correct answer, you also think analytically about the situations(s) given in the question. Sometimes what happens, you may get the correct answer even by using some absurd thinging, so ask the question WHY from yourself while solving the question.

I will recommend that for practicing, you take any one standard book instead of referring to too many books, though if you want, for different chapters you can refer different authors books.

There are majority of students who always have the complaint that they are not able to solve the questions even though they understand the concepts well, in actual, the major problem with these students is that they are not able to apply the concepts properly in different types of situations. They can improve their application part by doing little extra hard work. For these students I will recommend that they must go through simple and direct solved examples first just after going through the concepts.

While going through solved examples you have to keep/allowing things in mind:

Read the question carefully and analyse the situation.

Think about the question and the way you will approach the solutionuse pen and paper.

Now refer the solution and try to understand it.

If there is any difference in the solution provided and your thinking, then check for the correctness of your method. Remember one question can be solved by more than one ways and your solution can also be correct and more reasonable.

In this way when you do more and more questions you will feel more confident and after going through 15-20 questions of one topic you start trying the unsolved exercises. And this, you repeat for every topic, I hope within a month (if you do honest hard work) you will feel confident in physics.
