All About IITs
State-of-the-art infrastructure, world-class faculty and palatial campus-IIT, an institution that tops the league of great institutions, is truly a dream place to be at. Known to nurture the best of the best, IIT is celebrated the world over not for churning out engineering graduates but great minds. such is the “IIT-brand” that even the name is enough to enjoy hefty packages and recruitment in top-notch companies. Recently, even Microsoft, a world-revered organization, has recognized the contributions of the IIT students and has expressed its enthusiasm to see some of the “finest and brightest” Indian minds in its office.
Established in 1951, IIT Kharagpur is the foremost of the first five IITs. Located around 120 kilometers southwest of Kolkata, the institute boasts of its magnificent campus expanding to as large as 2100 acres.
Established in 1958, it is the second-oldest campus of the Indian Institutes of Technology system. Located at Powai, a northerns suburb of Mumbai, the institute is distinguished for strongeremphasis on scientific and technological research.
Inaugurated in 1959, this enginnering and technology school is located in Chennai (formerly Madras) in southern india. Established through the first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, IIT Madras is regarded as one of the finest engineering institutions in India today.
IIT Knapur is one of the major five IITs and is currently one of the most prestigious and highest-ranked engineering universities in India. Established in 1959, it is located 15 kilometers north of the city of Knapur.
Designated as an IIT in 1963, this school of excellence apart from academics is also characterized for its Student Activity Centre. Keeping in mind the overall development of students, facilities like football stadium, cricket ground, squash courts, basketball courts, lawn tennis courts and squash courts, among others have been provided.
Doing justics to the North-eastern part of the country, IIT Guwahati came into being in 1994. It is the first IIT to introduce design as one of the disciplines and awards the degree of B.Des. (Bachelor of Design) and M. Des (Master of Design) at Undergraduate, Post-graduate and Ph. D level.
The institute has advanced research centres in engineering, pure sciences and management studies. Originally established as the Roorkee College, this first engineering college of British India is better known as IIT Roorkee today.
IIT Ropar provides robust teaching environment, with a view to produce quality engineer-scientists. It is among the eight new IITs which have become functional in 2008-09. The institute is situated in Punjab, near Chandigarh.
Established on July 22, 2008, IIT Bhubaneswar’s present campuses are located at Samantpuri and Satyanaga rin the heart of the Bhubansewar city, Odisha. It is the first IIT to set up a separate marine campus in 2011 for conducting research in rising sea levels, ecology, disaster management, and areas.
With “Global excellence and local relevance” as driving philosophy behind every activity, IIT Hyderabad started its operations on August 20, 2008. While its permanent campus is located in Kandi, Medak District, Andhra Pradesh, it is currently functioning from a temporary campus located at Ordinace Factory Campus in Yeddumailaram village, Medak District.
IIT Gandhinagar kick-started in the year 2008-09. Its academic backbone has been created by a host of experienced academicians from various institutes of international stature as well as by the mentor institute, IIT Bombay. Located at Chandkheda, it takes 15 mins drive from Ahmedabad.
IIT Patna’s academic programs commenced on August 6, 2008. The institute currently operates from a temporary campus in Pataliputra colony and will alter move to permanent campus on the outskirts of Patna. While its academic block counts on high-class laboratories, as well as facilities for workshops and research, it also has a number of science and cultural clubs for the overall development of students.
Apart from offering B.Tech degrees in three disciplines, IIT Rajasthan plans to introduce a new four year B. Tech.programme in Systems Science in July 2011. Initiated in 2008-09, the institute is currently operating from MBM Engineering College and will have its permanent campus near Jodhpur city on National Higheay 65.
IIT Mandi has been established with a vision to be a leader in technical knowledge creation, education and innovation. While its permanent campus is under construction near the Uhl River, it is currently functioning from a transit campus at Mandi town.
IIT Indore started its session from the academic year 2009-10. While it will be permanently established at Simrol, it is currently operating from institute of Engineering and Technology, Devi Ahilyabai University. The institute, apart from offering undergraduate courses in engineering, also offers postgraduate programs in engineering, humanities and basic sciences.
