Online MBBS degrees and Crash Programmes for doctors

Category : Editorial

If one fails to get admission to a prestigious medical college, one can just get online MBBS degrees from next year according to newspaper reports.

Max health care is going to upgrade (?) the centres by adding 4000 beds within three years. Both Max-Care Centre as well as Ocenia University of U.S.A. are in touch with the Medical Council of India. But it is not sure whether the Medical Council is in touch with them.

Our students have not forgotten that many Indian students from Eastern European and Eurasian Republics of Russia, were not allowed to practice because MC! has not recognised their degrees. Online teaching, internet encyclopedias and soon virtual experiments on surgery will be in vogue. What is the guaranty that the Medical Council will recognise their degrees when students in so many Medical and Engineering colleges, privately run, do not know whether their degrees will be recognised?

MCI has to make it clear that unless the institutions are recognised, the degrees awarded by them will not be of any worth. They have to protect the interests of our students. Will such students be allowed to practice in U.S.A?

Indian doctors are practising as assistants in developed countries. Of course "F.R." (foreign returned) is a big qualification. When doctors display their degrees, they should also display from which university they are obtained.

It is another matter that India is having a surplus of specialists. Otherwise how can a Minister put his whole weight to pressurise the government and the parliament just to throw out the top specialist from AIIMS? Is it in anticipation of the flood of specialists who will come from on-line hospitals?

On one hand we want to improve the quality of education- On the other hand, when things are happening just the opposite, those who count at least follow one principle of the Father of the Nation - "see no evil, hear no evil, and talk no evil". We scientists can take refuge in Dirac's theory that every particle has its antiparticle. Is it not an extension of this to say that the evil and the good are inseparables? Is this a form of Laissez Faire?
