Introduction.  India lives in villages- The main occupation of Villagers is agriculture But it is pity that we are not self-sufficient in Food. Every year hundreds tones of food grains are imported from other countries. A large majority of population is undernourished Many people do not get two meals a day, ''1 eve rat parts ml the country Are facing famine conditions.

The causes of problem. There are many causes for [he shortage   food grains in our country. The Indian farmer is illiterate. He uses the old methods of Agriculture. Land holdings are verves small. The result is that the use of tractors .and scientific methods. Have become difficult the same old ploughs and bullocks’ are in use in agriculture.  Therefore the produce per aero in India is the lowest in the world

Secondly, our agriculture is a gamble on rains if there is a failure of rains all our crops dry up.  If there is excessive rain the crops are damaged. Thus drought and Hood play imcion.inl part in Indian Agriculture. The prosperity of agriculture depends upon the regular and normal rainfall. Thirdly, increase in population is the main cause of the food shortage in India.  Food problem and population arc Inter-related. We produce more mouths lo be fed than food to be given.

Measures adopted lo solve this problem. All the Five Year tans have taken measures to bring more land under cultivation.  Mostly been electrified and increase is being given to the cultivators to know how to increase food production.

Now the situation has changed considerably. India has supplied food grains to Soviet Union and other countries last year. Almost all the food grain imports have been stopped- it is due to the wise planning of the Government and the co-operation of the people. If the Distribution System is improved, the farmers would be assured of-good price of their produce.

Multiple cropping and intensive cultivation programmers are in action. The methods of quick growing crops have been taken up. Though floods cause much havoc and every year the same story is repealed, yet India has been able to increase production of food Grains with the help of new measures for cultivation.

Conclusion. A green revolution has been started and we hope to export food grains in the near future.
