Pickpocket

Category : Essays

The other day I was communting to school by bus. The bus was overcrowded. It had passengers almost double its capacity. The driver applied brakes all of a sudden. Owing to the jerk passengers lost their balance and fell on one another. One of the passengers was an old-lady. She could not get up after the fall.

The woman gathered her wits and strength in a short while. She looked for her purse in her sweeter pocket. It was gone. The conductor took pity on the old lady and blew the whistle for the bus to stop.

The bus stopped. Some passengers raised objections for delaying the bus. There were others who in sympathy with the old lady demanded that a search be carried out no matter what.

Who could object to it? A search was conducted. Everyone was asked to dip his hands in his pockets. There was one passenger who was very eager for others to be searched. He went round and thoroughly searched other's pockets himself.

There was a lot of noise and confusion. The missing purse could not be found. The conductor was a very good person. He was sorry that the old lady should thus lose whatever she had. He decided to take the bus to the police station closely. He gave the message to the driver. He whistled and the bus got going.

The bus took the first turning to the right and went straight into the police station.

In the meantime an elderly gentleman, a senior citizen proposed that person who had conducted search of all pockets, also be searched. Everybody liked the idea. The passengers now crowded round the fellow. The person through some excuse or the other tried to evade being searched—but to no avail. He was searched and thank god the purse was found intact in his inner pocket. The purse contained Rs 10,000 in higher denomination notes. The lady got back her purse and money.

The passengers were very angry. Here was the person responsible for the delay. They fell upon him and beat him no end. The SHO appeared, a smart person. He handcuffed the pickpocket, noted complaint of the lady, got the confirmation from a few witnesses quickly and assured that he would see to it that the pickpocket got maximum punishment.

Everyone had a good word for the conductor. The driver too joined in patting the conductor for a duty well done.

In its simplest terms, balanced approach means balancing the things - more to none and less to none, thus doing justice for everyone.

The balanced approach is applicable not only to essay of particular nature, but to all in general. It would, rather be appropriate to say that it is applicable to whole of the life of a sensible person. Speaking accurately, each of our actions requires a balanced treatment before it is done.
