A Rainy Day

Category : Essays

This season there has been less rainfall. It was the month of August—almost the fag end of the season. The school was functioning after the summer vacation. It was still quite hot. There was a change. Hot wind gave way to welcome breeze. It was an indication that rains were round the corner.

One fine morning, I set out for school. The sky was quiter clear then. Soon moving grey clouds covered the sky. I felt alarmed. I hid my bag and ran fast. I had hardly covered a short distance, when drizzling started—it changed into a good shower. It was welcomed by all. I took shelter under a big tree that gave me little protection as the leaves dripped. As the rain lessened, I ran towards the school. Luckily I was in time. The bell just rang.

But there were few students. Some teachers had turned up by then. It was a heavy downpour. After a while it began to rain again. Students came in ones and twos- but they were wet as they were caught in the rain.  Teaching work seemed out of question.

The principal waited for some time. The rain did not show any signs of stopping. He thus closed the school for the rest of the day.

I set out again was the rain heavy. All the roads were under water. There was no traffic. some of the low- lying  areas were under knee-deep water. The main road looked like a rivulet. Many got stranded and were waiting for   the rain to stop.

Still worse was the condition of the J.J. colony. The huts were giving way—they could not withstand the in ivy rain. The gushing water from the drains was entering their huts affecting precious household items.

It was about three in the afternoon when the fury of the rain lessened. It kept drizzling for some time and eventually stopped.

The people came out of shelter; the traffic started moving again. I also moved homeward. There was waterlogging even now. I had thus to walk through knee- deep water but was scared 6fc.open manholes.

I was in really bad shape. My body was covered with rain water and mud. My hair was dishevelled. My school bag and contents were wet.

My mother was anxiously waiting for me. She gave me clothes to change. She game me paneer and bread pakora and hot tea to warm up.

In the evening, the sky was still overcast. It was a nasty experience for me. But people said it is good for agriculture. It however cooled down and cool breeze was blowing—the weather got enchanting indeed. A rainy day, belatedly though, was on the whole welcome. People were earlier worried on account of not enough rainfall.

During the rainy season, one has to carry umbrella or heavy rain coat. Rain is really a thrilling experience—and god's gift for farmers anxiously looking towards the sky.
