Linking of Rivers

Category : Essays

From -thousands of years the Indian agriculture is based upon the monsoon. The Indian farmer always see the sky and waiting for rain and sometime his request was accepted by nature and sometime it was rejected. Sometimes his request was accepted by nature in" a different way and the excess of rain caused flood. So the Indian farmer was totally depend upon monsoon from thousands years. India is a country where a lot depends upon the moods of monsoons. This is truer in for the agricultural sector, A large part of the arable land in India is rain fed. If monsoon fails the budget goes haywire. There are a lot of plans winch try to decrease this dependence on monsoon.

One such project is river water linking or National Water Grid. Lot of talks has been going about this project. Many view that the linking of water-surplus of Himalayan Rivers will solve the water-scarcity of India. There are a lot of great and big rivers in our country like Ganga, Brahmaputra, Godawari, Krishna, Mahanadi, Vamuna, Satluj, jhelum and many more but at one place their excess water causes fiood that is why a lot of people lost their life, property and crops and on the Oilier place there is no single drop 0!' water in river so the people at that place also lost their life, properly and crops because of drought.

So excess water and no water both condition;; tire dangerous and harmful To solve these problems many limes the discussion is held to joined rivers of India and solve the problem of drought and flood both. A task force was set Lip most of whose current members are advocates of large- scale technologies to harness water and power intern-basin transfer of water m quite common. It has been done in the US, Canada and China.

Even within india, the Beas and Sutlej rivers have been linked and the Indira Gandhi Canal has brought water From the Sutlej (in Punjab) in the Bhakra canal to Rajasthan, The positive aspect of This project i;; that it would increase relegation and generate power to solve the country's major problems. Now electricity is the biggest problem or India without electricity our target to became a develop country will never fulfill.

Now every part of" our country suitor from the deficiency of electricity. Both central and all state government regularly working to increase the production of electricity but all in vain and the difference between demand and production is regularly increasing. In India almost 75-81)"',', of electricity is producing by thermal power by the burning of coal and we all know that coal is a perishable natural resource and one day it must finish and the production from thermal power causes a form of pollution also.

The production from hydro power is a good mean of power production because the hydropower is a non Perishable resource and this cause no pollution It" the interlinking of all rivers will complete than by the hydro power the problem of electricity in our country will solve substantially. Irrigation is also a typical and major problem of India today almost 50-60% farmers arc totally depend upon rain and their dependence often damage their business but by the interlinking of their river this irrigation problem Will solve and the dependence of farmers over rain will Minimizes by this project our country's two major problems electricity and irrigation will .solve a here was a time when India went with a begging bowl to see food aid.

The fact that India has a population which as growing by leaps and bounds and every year we have crores of new months to feed, nobody wants to go back to this  days That project of linking rivers could be the cornerstone of the dream of a developed and prosperous India. But [his project is not without its pitfalls. Arresting the natural flow of rivers on this gigantic scale could destroy the mangroves require region of West Bengal and Bangladesh. Mangroves require the steady rise and fall of the sea level so that their roots can breathe. Once this process is disrupted, the richest fishing grounds in South Asia could become a part of history and folklore.

Due to the disturbance of the delicate water balance of the area salinity would also make increase and in the process destroy thousands of hectares of arable land. The disturbance in the economic balance of the area will also have to be accounted for. Planners will have to consider alternative employment opportunities and compensation plans of millions of fisher folk in catchments area of the rivers. Critics of river linking scheme advocate of increasing the productivity of existing arable land rather than bringing new areas under cultivation.

China produces as much as 4.6 tormes of cereal per hectare, while India produces only 2.1 tonnes. And that China has less arable land per head than India does. Efficient use of existing irrigational opportunities must also be considered. In India, due to the political clout exerted by rich farmers, irrigation— which accounts for 70 to 80 per cent of the total water consumed—is often wasteful, since there is no metering or usage and farmers sinfully flood their fields.

The country could increase food availability by greater efficiency without increasing irrigation. India has a large coastline and desalination of the sea water and using it for irrigation purposes as also one of the alternatives which must be seriously considered, A Bangalore company is providing desalinated water at about of Rs. 5 (US 9 cents) per lite, as against an international price of S1-S1.25 per kilolitre, which works out to be roughly miler. He said this could, in time, prove a boon to those living in coastal areas. The rivers which are flowing In India also flowing in neighboring countries like pakistan, Chin and Bangladesh.

Our country must agree all these countries before starting' this project- The other drawback of this projects its cost. In 2003 the Honourable Supreme Court (if India ordered Government of India to start this project and complete if within 10 years then Government of India told the court that this project can't & be completed within "10 years and almost 5,5-000 crore rupees will spent upon it. This is a very big cost but for the welfare of country this colt must bear. Now we all have to join hands with Government and working for this project because when it will complete then a lot of our problem, will solve.
