This year, I had planned with my friends to watch the parade from India Gate. Advance arrangements were made. The colorful pageantry started from Vijay Chowk around 9.30 a.m. The defence minister, the Prime Minister, the Vice-President, and the President of India arrived at the saluting base in that order.

The President was followed by a squad of his body guards who saluted as he unfurled the national flag. A 21-gun salute boomed and the national anthem played. The army parade started. The para military forces were there and the boys and girls from NCC and the territorial army. The synchronised marching and discipline and smart turnout is very impressive. Military bands of the wings played with vigour. Latest long-range missiles that were test fired successfully were on display—that proved the country's might—as well as radar, and latest armoury and arsenal.

This was followed by picturesque tableaux from different states of India and other undertakings. A tableau from a state had everything in flower. Another tableau showed khadi as a versatile fabric for modern clothing. There were also cultural pageants and school children's mass drill and dance to the accompaniment of patriotic tunes and songs. These definitely aroused patriotism in those countless folk watching.

Army helicopters showered rose petals on VIPs and commons. Later baloons in tricolour went up signaling that India's flag was flying high and the country was strong at the 54th Republic Day celebration.

In the night, all significant government buildings are illuminated. "Beating Retreat" a few days after late in the evening marks the finale. The parade indeed is inspiring and the people develop a sense of wholesome well-being.
