Someone has rightly said: "If wealth is lost; nothing is lost. If wealth is lost, nothing is lost. If character is lost, everything is lost."

Thus, if we lose health, we lose something. Of course, it’s not wise to lose even 'something'. So, we must take great care of health.

In advanced countries, people enjoy very good health. It is because they are health-conscious. They compel their governments to spend a major part of the budget on health measures for the common people.

India is a developing country. People here are not as health-conscious as in developed countries. The Indian government provides only a meager amount for health purposes in the annual budget.

Fortunately, there has been a slight change after Nobel Laureate Dr. Amartya Sen declared emphatically that no country could progress in real terms until sound measures are taken to provide education and health services even to the poorest sections of society.

Even at present, there has not been much improvement in the health of the common people. It is because medical facilities, though abundantly available in the country, are too costly to be borne by an average man.

However, if one were to reflect a little deeply, one could arrive at the conclusion that to a great extent a man's health depends upon the man himself also.

There are certain factors which can ensure good health to most of the people. Among such measures, we have a balanced diet, regular exercise, freedom from tension and worries, etc.

Children should be given more fats and proteins as compared to grown-ups as it is their growing age. Adults should take less fat and salt in Particular. They should have regular tests of their blood, urine etc. so that if any disease starts, it can be nipped in the bud or controlled without any loss of time.

Consulting a physician regularly even while without being suffering from any disease should not be regarded as waste of time and money. Regular dental care is a must. The most important thing to maintain good health is regular exercise. Young people should take part in sports. They can take even strenuous exercise. The old people should take light exercise such as walking.

We should also take interest in cleanliness drive. Not only our clothes but also our surroundings and houses should be kept clean to ward off flies, mosquitoes and bacteria. If positive steps are taken, one can maintain good health.
